ABANDONED MANSION IN ABANDONED TOWN // Exploring The Kennedy Mansion In Port Kennedy Pennsylvania
Daily Vlog: 0207 (01/09/23)
Established in the early 1800βs, Port Kennedy Pennsylvania was built up around a major lime quarry on the banks of the Schuylkill River and named after Alexander Kennedy, the owner of the quarries. In 1842 John Kennedy, the youngest son of Alexander purchased the lime works, and continued to keep them very successful during his lifetime. Ten years later in 1852 he built his mansion on a high knoll overlooking the town as a focal point that he lived in until his death in 1877. Over time the lime works were shut down and the house changed hands many time. It was used not only as a homestead, but apartments, and even as a restaurant. Today the building is owned by the Valley Forge National Historical Park and the village of Port Kennedy has been all but erased, absorbed into other towns and into the national park. Today the mansion still sits abandoned on itβs knoll across from the Valley Forge visitor center and up against route 422 that splits the original town of Port Kennedy in half. Hopefully someday the National Park service will use this structure as a museum dedicated to the industrial history of Valley Forge and Port Kennedy after the Revolutionary War.
